Essential Drucker Chapter6: Management's new paradigms-The one right way to manage people

  • Different people have to be managed differently
  • Employees, subordinates in an organization are becoming associates, partners.
  • They know more about their job than anybody else in the organization whereas their superiors know nothing about the details of their job. They have to make their suprior understand what should be doing, what results are in their respective areas. They depend on the superior to give direction and to define what the standards, values, performance and results.
  • They have to be managed as volunteers. Money alone doesn't motivate them. Management of people is a "marketing job". One need to start with the question, What does he want? Waht does the other party want?
  • The starting point of management - managing for performance - is definition of results.

One does not "manage" people.
The task is to lead people.
And the goal is to make productive the specific strengths and knowledge of each individual.
